The science

What's actually happening in there?

Meet Professor Terp, our resident plant chemist. Below: the molecules, the receptors, and the reason two "indicas" can feel completely different.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS)

Your body already makes cannabinoid-like molecules. The ECS is a signaling network that helps keep things in balance — appetite, sleep, mood, pain signaling, immune response. Plant cannabinoids work because they fit the same locks.

THC CBD CB1 receptors brain & nervous system CB2 receptors immune & peripheral tissue Signaling shifts mood • appetite • pain • sleep

The short version: THC binds CB1 directly — that's the intoxication. CBD mostly works indirectly and doesn't produce a high.

Cannabinoid cheat sheet

CompoundIntoxicating?What it's known for
THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol)YesThe primary psychoactive compound; also the basis of approved anti-nausea medicines.
THCANo (raw)The acid form in the living plant; heat converts it to THC — that's why decarboxylation matters for edibles.
CBDNoApproved as a purified drug for rare epilepsies; widely sold in wellness products.
CBGNoThe precursor other cannabinoids are built from; human research is early.
CBNMildlyForms as THC ages; heavily marketed for sleep with thin evidence so far.
THCVDose-dependentStructurally similar to THC with different effects at different doses; under study.

Terpenes: where the smell lives

Terpenes are aromatic compounds found across the plant kingdom. They give each cultivar its nose — and many researchers think they shape the experience alongside cannabinoids (the debated "entourage effect").

🍋

Limonene

Citrus peel. Also in lemons and oranges.

🌲

Pinene

Pine needles and rosemary. Sharp and fresh.

🥭

Myrcene

Mango and hops; earthy-fruity, the most common cannabis terpene.

🌸

Linalool

Lavender. Floral and soft.

🌶️

Caryophyllene

Black pepper; unusual in that it binds CB2 receptors directly.

🌿

Humulene

Hops and sage; woody and herbal.

How to read a dispensary label

Every regulated package tells a story if you know the fields. Here's a walkthrough of a typical flower label:

Potency panel

Total THC already accounts for THCA conversion — it's the number that matters, not the raw THCA figure. Total CBD works the same way.

Batch & test date

Terpenes fade over months. A recent harvest and packaging date usually means a better-smelling, better-tasting product.

Safety screening

Regulated labs test for pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents, microbials, and mycotoxins. The label or QR code should link to results.

Serving size (edibles)

A "10 mg serving" in a 100 mg package means ten doses, not one snack. Portion deliberately.
